What You Need to Know

Health insurance is mandatory

Upon registering your address in Japan, you must enroll in either Employee Health Insurance (through your employer) or National Health Insurance (NHI). Starting June 2027, unpaid NHI/pension premiums may result in visa renewal denial.

Processing times vary

Certificate of Eligibility typically takes 1-3 months. Visa processing at consulates takes 5-10 business days. Status changes within Japan can take 2-4 weeks. Plan ahead.

Documents may need translation

Official documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, degrees) must be translated into Japanese by a certified translator. Costs range from ¥3,000 to ¥10,000 per document.

PR now requires 5-year visa

As of 2026, permanent residence applicants must hold the maximum period of stay for their visa category (typically 5 years for work visas). Transitional grace period applies until March 31, 2027.

Departure tax tripled

From July 2026, the departure tax increases from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 per person leaving Japan by air or sea.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Japan work visa cost in 2026?

Under current fees (April 2025), a work visa costs ¥4,000 for the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) plus ¥4,000 for the visa stamp. However, the Diet approved a 2026 reform bill introducing duration-based pricing: renewals will cost approximately ¥10,000 for 3 months, ¥20,000–30,000 for 1 year, and ¥70,000 for 5 years (exact amounts pending Cabinet Order). This is the first fee revision since 1982. Additional costs include document translation (¥3,000–¥10,000), and immigration lawyer fees (¥50,000–¥200,000 if used).

How much does Japan permanent residence cost in 2026?

The current government fee is ¥8,000. Under the 2026 reform bill, the statutory ceiling rises to ¥300,000 — the expected implementation fee is around ¥200,000 (a 25× increase). This is the largest visa fee increase in Japan's history. Applicants also need the maximum period of stay for their visa (5 years for most work visas). Preparation costs include: tax records, residence history, translation (¥30,000–¥80,000), and optional lawyer fees (¥100,000–¥200,000). Total realistic cost under new rules: ¥350,000–¥700,000.

Is the Japan Specified Skilled Worker visa (特定技能) worth it?

The Specified Skilled Worker visa (特定技能, SSW) is worth considering if you work in one of Japan's 16 designated industries (manufacturing, construction, food service, hospitality, agriculture, nursing care, etc.) and meet the skills test requirements. The visa allows 5-year renewal cycles (SSW2 is indefinitely renewable and leads to permanent residence). Current government fees are ¥4,000 for COE + ¥4,000 for the visa, but renewal fees are expected to rise to ¥10,000–¥70,000 under the 2026 reform (varies by duration). The main challenge is passing the Japanese language proficiency test (JLPT N4 minimum) and industry-specific skills exams.

How much does a Japan student visa cost?

Currently, a Japan student visa costs ¥3,000 for the visa stamp and ¥4,000 for the COE application. Under the 2026 reform, student visa renewal fees will also adopt duration-based pricing (estimated ¥10,000–¥70,000), though they may be set lower than work visa rates. Translation of academic transcripts costs ¥20,000–¥50,000. If using an education agent, add ¥30,000–¥100,000. Total cost: ¥60,000–¥170,000 under current rules, potentially higher after the reform.

Can I work in Japan on a tourist visa or digital nomad visa?

Working in Japan on a tourist (short-stay) visa is illegal and can result in deportation and a ban from re-entry. Japan launched a Digital Nomad Visa (特定活動, specific activity) in March 2024 for remote workers employed by non-Japanese companies. Requirements: annual income of ¥10,000,000+ (about $66,000 USD), private health insurance, and a nationality from one of 49 eligible countries. The visa is valid for 6 months and is not renewable — you must leave Japan and re-apply.

How long does a Japan visa application take?

Processing times vary by visa type. A tourist visa (short-stay) takes 3–5 business days at a Japanese embassy. Work and student visas require a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) first, which takes 1–3 months to process by Japan Immigration. After receiving the COE, the visa stamp at an embassy takes 3–5 business days. Spouse visas also take 2–4 months for COE approval. Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) visa COEs can be processed in as little as 2 weeks under Japan's priority processing scheme.

What is the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and why is it needed?

The Certificate of Eligibility (在留資格認定証明書, COE) is a document issued by Japan's Immigration Services Agency confirming that a foreign national meets the requirements for a specific visa category. It is required for most long-stay visas (work, student, spouse, etc.). Your employer or school in Japan applies for it on your behalf. The COE costs ¥4,000 in government fees and is valid for 3 months from issuance. You present it at a Japanese embassy abroad to get your actual visa stamp.

Do I need an immigration lawyer to apply for a Japan visa?

Most people do not need an immigration lawyer (行政書士 or 弁護士) to apply for a standard work or student visa in Japan. Your employer's HR department or school's administrative office typically handles the COE application. However, a lawyer is useful for: complex cases with prior overstays or immigration violations, highly skilled professional visa (HSP) applications, permanent residence applications where rejection is costly, and business manager visas requiring detailed business plans. Lawyer fees run ¥50,000–¥200,000 depending on complexity.
